The split between Bill and Melinda Gates that was announced last week has been a long time in the making. It is the latest development after Gates announced his divorce in early May, 27 years after they married. Bill Gates, the world's richest man, has attracted new attention in recent weeks after announcing his divorce from wife Melinda earlier this month, ending 27 years of marriage.
Warren Buffett stepped down as trustee of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Wednesday and said she would announce plans to answer questions about her leadership structure and how she handled the divorce of her two founders in July. Questions have arisen about the future of the Seattle-based Gates Foundation, which has invested $50 billion in endowment assets and $55 billion in grants since its founding more than 20 years ago. Buffett is one of three members of the foundation's board, the other two being Gates and Gates Jr.
In June 2006, Gates announced that he would move from a part-time position at Microsoft to a full-time position at Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a private charitable foundation he and his wife founded in 2000, Melinda Gates. In 2000, the couple merged several family foundations and made $2.8 billion in donations to establish the Gates Foundation. He joined the former couple in 2010 to launch the Giving Pledge, an effort to encourage billionaires to give away the bulk of their wealth during their lifetimes, which they would then pass on to their offspring.
On 13 March 2020, Microsoft announced that Gates would leave his Board roles at Berkshire Hathaway and Microsoft to focus on philanthropic efforts such as climate change, global health, development and education. Gates has pursued a number of charitable efforts throughout his career, and since leaving Microsoft in 2008 as the day-to-day running. He has donated substantial sums to various charities and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a private charitable foundation he founded in 2000 with his wife Melinda Gates.
Gates stepped down as chairman in February 2014 but remained on the board until 2020. The investigation, which a company spokeswoman confirmed on Sunday, took place months after Gates resigned from the board last year.
Gates was reportedly accused of downplaying his connection to Epstein, a convicted sex offender who later killed himself in federal custody. A second report showed a pattern in which Gates behaved inappropriately with women he worked with and handled allegations of sexual harassment against his money manager in a way that angered Melinda. The most damaging revelation was that Gates admitted to having an affair with a Microsoft employee in 2000, triggering an investigation by the tech giant's board of directors, according to a third report.
Gates has been shrouded in questions about his romantic life for the foreseeable future and is said to be uncomfortable with financial and legal questions about the future of his fortune. The divorce is proceeding according to initial reports, and people who know the couple expect more details to come to light soon.
Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, said he is halfway to his goal of donating all of his shares in the company: he will donate $4.1 billion to five foundations with the lion's share going to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Bill and Melinda's relationship began as an office romance when he was the boss and she was a young employee; he flirted at conferences and asked her in company car parks. They married in 1994 and he has occasionally pursued women outside the office.
